Our Classes

Group Classes

Our group classes bring together teens and adults (ages 13+) in a shared spirit of discipline, respect, and growth. Training alongside practitioners of different ranks and experience levels fosters both challenge and inspiration—senior students model precision and spirit, while newer students bring energy and curiosity to the floor.

Each class integrates conditioning, foundational techniques, kata, and partner work. The result is a supportive yet demanding environment where every student develops strength, focus, and confidence while advancing at their own pace.

Private Lessons

Private lessons offer focused, one-on-one instruction for students seeking to refine specific techniques, deepen kata understanding, or explore applications in greater detail. This personalized format allows for concentrated attention and accelerated progress.

While private study provides a valuable opportunity for individualized growth, it complements—but does not replace—the camaraderie, rhythm, and shared learning that come from training within the group.

Lessons at Crane Karate Academy

Rooted in the classical traditions of Okinawan Shorin-Ryu and White Crane, our adult program (ages 13+) emphasizes disciplined training, mindful movement, and the preservation of authentic karate-do. Each class follows a structured format that mirrors how karate has been practiced for generations:

Training begins with calisthenics and kihon (fundamental techniques) to strengthen the body and refine movement. We follow with stretching and a review of foundational kata—patterns that connect us to the art’s deep history and teach efficiency, balance, and power.

From there, students work in smaller groups to study self-defense applications (bunkai), develop new techniques, or refine their kata under the guidance of experienced instructors. Every session is tailored to the student’s level, maintaining the integrity of traditional practice while supporting personal growth and continuous improvement.

Classes at Crane Karate Academy build more than strength and flexibility—they cultivate awareness, humility, and confidence through the disciplined study of a living martial art.

Why Learn Traditional Karate?

Modern combat styles are tailored toward MMA as a sport while advertising “realistic” experience and skills. This approach is dangerous. MMA is focused on joint locks, torque, and stress on the joints and body that is not sustainable over the lifetime. Furthermore, in a realistic scenario where you might need to defend yourself, landing on the ground is immensely dangerous – particularly if you are facing multiple attackers or a single attacker that is larger or stronger.

Traditional martial arts are different. Okinawan Karate is meant to be practiced over the course of your lifetime. As your body ages, your skills and experience remain relevant and what and how you practice can continue to evolve to promote healthy aging and general wellness. Traditional martial arts are defensive in nature and you’ll learn both how to avoid/deescalate conflict as well as how to properly respond to effectively protect yourself and loved ones in those rare, unavoidable circumstances when it is necessary. There is no first attack in karate.
